I'm in a few fiction groups on facebook and aomeone asked "What do you feel about RPF?" Now, this is a ff.net group so I just said I write both.

Well.

People exploded about it!! But this guy called me out personally;



I didn't respond and don't plan on responding. But why ask the question if you don't expect a multitude of answers? And I personally don't think fanfiction in any sense is wrong, (maybe I am biased) but he still made me feel like shit.

This by far one of the craziest things I have ever read. I have no idea why people are getting so up in arms open something that is not true. The key word in Real Person Fiction is the word FICTION. Its not real so this person really should look up the definition of Fiction because he start to preach at people. You lotrspnfangirl have nothing to feel bad about.

Thank you! You made me smile. And I completely agree! It's fiction for a reason, and people KNOW it's fiction because the only place it's posted is on fanfiction sites. I ended up leaving the group because they just went ON and ON and ON about it. That's what I get for joining a fanfiction.net group lol

Oh man, I wanted to reply and correct his spelling and grammar SO badly, but I figured that would just open me up for some more crap. And I agree with you! One of their points was how would you like it if someone wrote about YOU and it made me laugh. If I was famous... I would appreciate smutty fanfiction over tabloids smearing me. At least it would be my FANS that would be reading and writing about me.

I imagine it would be weird if thousands of people were writing stories about fake-me. But "fake-me" is kind of the operative term here. No RPF author pretends anything other than the most superficial of connections between their characters and the actors. We borrow their looks, maybe their relationships, and sometimes a few character traits fandom has given them (Jensen loves coffee but is grumpy in the morning; Jared's basically a big puppy dog). No one thinks you're writing a story about Jared's actual life.

I think this is part of the reason authors get nervous about sites like goodreads. There are expectations and understandings within fandom that don't always translate to the world at large.

I think RPF gets a very bad rep... People don't understand that we're not just writing awful stories about actors and trying to pass it off as true. One thing they kept saying was, "How would you like someone writing about you being a rapist or getting raped?" and I wanted to ask if that's seriously all they thought RPF was about?! Obviously, I've written some angsty and questionable stuff before... but like you said, it stays in the fandom and I don't try to pass it off as a true story at all!

He was a jerk. And I've blocked the post because every time someone commented I got pissed off all over again. Though, more people came out of the wood work after my comment (I was the first to say I wrote RPF) and took my side and said they wrote it too so that was nice.
